Présentation

• La route nationale 4, ou RN4, est une route nationale luxembourgeoise qui relie Luxembourg à la frontière française à Esch-sur-Alzette en direction d'Audun-le-Tiche. Une section de son tracé a été incorporée à l'autoroute A4.

Historique

Généralités

• À sa création, en 1843, elle est décrite comme étant la route de Luxembourg à Esch-sur-Alzette. Surnommée la « Route d'Esch », elle succède alors à la Grande route belge de deuxième classe allant de Luxembourg à Esch.
• La loi du 5 mai 1958 déclasse une section en CR106 à Lallange, suite à une rectification de tracé au niveau de cette localité.
• Les ouvertures successives de l'autoroute d'Esch participent au déclassement de la RN4 :
  • xx xx 1969 : section Pontpierre [3] - Lallange [5], classée en RN4B et autoroute A4 ;
  • xx xx 1976 : section Leudelange-Sud [2] - Pontpierre [3], classée partiellement en autoroute A4.
• La loi du 22 décembre 1995 déclasse des sections diverses en chemins vicinaux à Esch-sur-Alzette entre les quartiers Al-Esch, Schlassgoard et Grenz. Des échanges de voirie sont constatés, la RN4 reprenant des chemins vicinaux dans cette ville.
• La loi du 15 décembre 2021 déclasse à son tour une section de RN en chemin vicinal au niveau de Pontpierre, suite à la mise en service du contournement de cette localité via l'autoroute A4 en 1976.

Aménagements

• 1868 : construction d'une route à travers les fortifications de Luxembourg en prolongement de la rue Marie-Thérèse dans la direction de Rheinsheim (Mémorial A20/1868)
• 1917 : travaux de redressement de la route de Luxembourg à Esch-sur-Alzette (Mémorial A42/1917)
• Années 1950 : déviation de Foetz
• Années 1970 : rectification de tracé à Cloche d'Or pour le passage de l'autoroute A6
• Années 1990 : rectification de tracé au sud d'Esch-sur-Alzette

Futur

• Réaménagement de la « Croix de Gasperich » avec reconstruction de l'ouvrage d'art 216 sur l'autoroute A6 et réaménagement du carrefour formé par la route nationale 4 et le chemin repris 186 , dans le cadre de la construction du nouveau stade de Luxembourg (Mémorial A173/2001)
